:: REFRIGERATOR ::

Install the refrigerator away from direct sunlight, draught of air or any other heat generating appliances like stove, oven etc.
In case of models with external condenser, clean the condenser coils periodically (once in 6 months). Always keep them free from dust and lint.
Refrigerator components like compressors generate heat, so provide enough breathing space around refrigerator (min. 100 mm) for continuous airflow around refrigerator. If the heat can't escape, the refrigerator's cooling system will work harder and consume more electrical energy.
Check door gasket for any air leakage. Door gaskets should provide a tight seal. Replace gaskets that have become hard or out of shape or leaving small gap.
In case of direct cool or conventional models, defrost it regularly (when frost builds up over freezer is about 6 mm thick). A defrosted refrigerator operates more efficiently than one that is ice-coated.
Keep the frequency & duration of door opening to the minimum. For this, think about what you need to take out or store before opening refrigerator door. You'll reduce the amount of time the door remains open.
Fully loaded refrigerator is fine but ensure adequate air circulation inside.
Never place hot food inside the refrigerator; allow it to cool it room temperature before storing in the refrigerator. Also allow foods to cool in refrigerator prior to freezing. For proper food safety, food should be refrigerated within two hours of being cooked. Leave container covers loosely fitted/little open so that food cools faster then tightly covered.
Cover/wrap all food stuff; especially liquids, leafy vegetables etc.
Do not use refrigerator on maximum setting unnecessarily.

:: AIR-CONDITIONER ::

Select air-conditioner of proper heat removal capacity (consult experts before purchase) Use properly calculated heating and cooling or cooling alone air-conditioner. Oversized appliance reduces operating efficiency.
For good results install air-conditioner at the center of the room & at a height not more than 2 mtrs. from floor level (consult experts before installation ).
Shade the room air-conditioner from direct sunlight. When possible, plant trees and bushes to keep the day's hottest sun away from your house.
Close drapes/curtains to keep sun rays away.
Room to be air-conditioned should be properly insulated & sealed (around doors & windows etc.).
Avoid frequent door opening & over crowding in the room.
User can save upto 3-5% less energy for each degree air conditioner is set above 22°C. Hence set the thermostat of room air conditioner at 25-26°C to provide the most comfort at the least cost.
Clean air filter regularly (Avoid dusting the room with air-conditioner ON). A dirty air filter reduces airflow and consumes more electrical energy.
Get the air-conditioner serviced regularly from an authorized person.
Use ceiling fan, intermittently, to spread cooling evenly as also when its not to hot. Using ceiling or room fans allows you to set the thermostat higher because the air movement will cool the room.
If air conditioner is older and needs repair, it's likely to be very inefficient.

:: WASHING MACHINE ::

Plan laundry to wash and always use washing machine to its full capacity.
Select proper water level as per load.
Soaking clothes improves washing results while conserving energy.
Select suitable wash program & timing as per wash load.
Use hot water to wash heavily soiled clothes and for sanitation purposes.

:: MICROWAVE OVEN ::
Microwaves save energy by reducing cooking time. In fact, one can save as high as 50% on your cooking energy costs by using a microwave oven instead of a regular oven, especially for small quantities of food.
Remember, microwaves cook food from the outside edge toward the centre of the dish, so if you're cooking more than one item, place larger and thicker items on the outside.
Cover the vessels with proper lids while cooking.

:: TIPS FOR HOUSE LIGHTING ::

Consider using fluorescent lights. They produce more light per watt as incandescent bulbs, and usually last longer.
Keep fixtures clean to maintain lighting efficiency.
Turn off lights when no one is using them or not required.
Choose the right wattage bulb for the lighting task.
Consider installing timers or photoelectric cells to operate outdoor lights.
